Getting up from a low sofa without pushing on your knees

The nose-over-toes trick, and why your hands belong on the sofa, not your thighs.

Anaya Mehta, PT22 September 20262 min read

Most Pune living rooms have one sofa that everyone avoids. It is low, soft and deep, and getting out of it has become a small daily struggle. People push down on their knees, rock forward three times, or wait for someone to offer a hand. None of that is necessary. Standing up is a skill, and it can be relearned in a week.

Why pushing on your knees doesn’t help

When you press your hands into your thighs, you load the knee joint at the exact moment it is working hardest. It also keeps your weight behind your feet, which is the real reason you can’t get up. The problem is rarely strength alone. It is position.

Nose over toes. If your nose is over your toes, your legs can lift you.

The sit-to-stand

5 in a row, 3 times a day

  1. Shuffle forward until you are sitting on the front third of the cushion.
  2. Bring both feet back so your heels are slightly behind your knees.
  3. Put your hands flat on the sofa beside your hips, not on your thighs.
  4. Lean forward until your nose is over your toes. Your bottom will start to lift on its own.
  5. Push through your heels and stand tall. Pause for a second before you walk.

Stop if: You feel sharp knee pain or dizziness on standing.

Make the sofa taller

A firm cushion adds five to seven centimetres, which is often the difference between struggling and not. If a family member sits on that sofa comfortably and you don’t, the cushion is for you. Sit on it without apology.

Practise when it doesn’t matter

Do your five repetitions after breakfast, before lunch and in the evening, when nobody is waiting for you and there is no hurry. Within a week most people notice the first stand of the day is easier. Within a month it stops being a thing they think about.
